A Training Facility Built to a Higher Standard

When designing a landmark NBA facility with LEED Platinum mandates, south-facing facade challenges, and player privacy requirements, the product selection is critical. “Solera was the only product that would’ve done what we needed.”

The Challenge: Six Constraints, One Solution

Designing the Golden 1 Center, home of the NBA Sacramento Kings, was a challenging design due to the already established urban fabric of the city. AECOM worked with glazier Bagatelos, who introduced Solera® as a potential daylighting solution. The practice facility’s south-facing facade created a complex set of interdependent requirements that had to be solved simultaneously.

Six Critical Design Constraints

South-Facing Facade: Massive glare and heat gain challenge requiring a product that could cut both without blocking daylight.
Player Privacy: Windows near the street needed to offer privacy to players while maintaining openness when desired.
Glare & Heat Control: Had to diffuse light for optimal playing conditions without sacrificing the connection to the outdoors.
LEED Platinum Mandates: Product selection was critical to uphold LEED standards and meet all Platinum designation requirements.
Seamless Curtainwall Integration: Translucent glazing needed to integrate into the existing curtainwall system with no customization required.
Evoke the Mountains: Design needed to evoke the memory of the Yosemite and Sierra Nevada mountain range — whether the building was open or closed.

The Solution: “The Only Product That Would’ve Done What We Needed”

After rigorous municipal selection — where no low-grade products were permitted — AECOM chose Solera® by Advanced Glazings Ltd. as the daylighting solution. It was the only product that addressed all six constraints simultaneously.

Why Solera® Was the Only Option

Solera® cut glare and heat, diffused light evenly, provided player privacy at street level, integrated seamlessly into the curtainwall system without customization, met all LEED Platinum thermal requirements, and complemented the perforated-metal mountain cladding aesthetic.

“Solera was the only product that would’ve done what we needed. It was one of the more effortless things on the project. This was an important job and we needed to ensure all products went through rigorous selection by the municipality and no low-grade products were used.”
— Rob Rothblatt, Project Lead, AECOM

“Solera was not only a big player for meeting LEED requirements, but it backed up a bigger metaphor for this project’s story, history and as a new landmark in downtown Sacramento. Solera was a seamless integration, the color looked great by complementing the outside curtainwall and the building’s performance goals were met.”
— Rob Rothblatt, Project Lead, AECOM

Beyond Daylighting: “All Things Were Done Like They Were Never Done Before”

The Golden 1 Center’s LEED Platinum designation was the result of an unprecedented approach to sustainability across every system in the building. Solera® was a critical piece, but the entire project set new standards:

  • Solera® Translucent Glazing — Cut glare and heat, diffused light, provided player privacy, seamless curtainwall integration
  • Solar Panels — Donated panels covered 75% of the roof
  • Tesla Battery Storage — Stored excess power generated on-site
  • Giant Airport Doors — Innovative approach to openness and natural ventilation
  • Bird-Friendly Frits — All glazings and exterior materials protected birds and wildlife
  • Perforated-Metal Cladding — Evoked the memory of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada mountains

“Solera fit with the R-values we needed and required no change or customization to integrate into our existing curtainwall system. We were very pleasantly surprised by Solera.”
